Starting a Solid Income in Affiliate Marketing
It’s hard to get a project going, let alone a money-making venture like affiliate marketing. There’s the danger of riding the hype but then losing steam halfway through, with no profits to show for your efforts. Being a long-time EpicToon affiliate, I thought I’d share some tips on becoming a steady earner in affiliate marketing:
Choose a niche—and know it inside out
Think a business tycoon just “stumbled upon” his or her field of success? Ventures spend thousands of dollars to find a profitable market. The same scrutiny applies to choosing a niche in affiliate marketing, but minus the big bucks investment.
In fact, you only need a good internet connection and some time for self-reflection to know which products you can promote and earn a commission from, which is what affiliate marketing is all about.
Begin by asking yourself these questions: What kind of products do I want to promote in my website? Who buys these products and why? How do I entice potential customers to trust the products I’m recommending? There are tons of other questions to ask, so consult others for advice.
Some affiliates choose their niche based on their “passion”—a good decision if you’re the type to lose interest fast. You won’t easily abandon products you know and love. Another valid route is to scan the internet for niches with growing markets.
I personally promote gaming services like those from EpicToon.com because I like online games and know a lot of more people are getting into them, just from observing friends and family alone!
Set up a slick website
Affiliate marketing boils down to a simple equation. If no one visits your websites or clicks your links, then you earn zero commission.
So after choosing a niche, you should focus all your efforts into creating compelling websites and links. I promote gaming services, for example, so I keep a website that has regular updates on online gaming as well as other topics that my readers will be interested in like computer gadgets and viral videos.
By keeping all these related content in my website, online gamers make it a point to visit my site often. If they browse more frequently, then chances of them clicking and buying from my affiliate banners and links also increase, thus giving me more commissions.
Of course you have to be strategic in where you place your ads and links, which is where good website design comes into play. If you have the funds, consider hiring a professional website programmer who can help you set up online—and is often worth every penny for the expertise they bring like creating an effective layout for your homepage.
Network, network, network!
So you’ve got your website up and running with fresh content, all the links are working, and a growing number of potential customers are saving you in their bookmarks. Great! Now it’s time to reach out and let the rest of the world know.
In boosting your website traffic, be as creative as you can be with your promotion. If you have some spare cash, you can even pay for advertising on other popular hangouts for your target market.
Or do a grassroots approach that doesn’t cost much, like how I spend a few hours posting on forums and blogs where online gamers hang out. Don’t discount real life friends and family who can get the word out there, whether through casual talks or by referring you via social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
Partner with Trusted, Reliable Programs
It’s easy to take all the credit for myself, that my affiliate marketing business got to where it is today without any outside help. But that would be a disservice to EpicToon.com and all the great product merchants out there who don’t disappoint the customers referred by their affiliates.
See, affiliate marketing is also a game of association—if you refer your loyal website visitors to sellers who then rip them off, do you expect them to keep returning to your site? Of course not—they could even do worse by spreading negative comments about you and the products affiliated with your website. So get a feel for your partners, visit their website, and try their products or services so you feel safer recommending them.
